The story behind it all.

Khoi, Founding Director

My name is Khoi, the founding director of Luna Academy. Thank you for taking the time to get to know us.

I founded Luna Academy after more than a decade of tutoring students of all ages and backgrounds. Back in 2019, we were still called ATAR Academy. But as we grew, it became clear that the name no longer reflected who we were or what we stood for.

I’ve always been a high achiever all my life. I was top of my class in high school and even graduated as the Valedictorian of my year at the University of Queensland in 2018. But even with strong results, what stuck with me most wasn’t the grades. It was the mindset that got me there.

Over the years of teaching, I realised that succeeding in school is more than just mastering all the content. It’s about how students think about learning, how they respond to setbacks, and whether they have someone in their corner who believes in them. I’ve worked with students from all different grades and backgrounds. Some already knew how to succeed, and others felt completely stuck. No matter where they started, one thing became clear: with the right support and mindset, every student has the potential to achieve great things. That’s a belief I hold firmly.

And that belief was what led Julia (my wife) and me to start Luna Academy. We wanted to change the tutoring scene, which was hyper-focused on doing whatever it takes to achieve good grades, even if it meant grinding through generic worksheets. We’ve seen the consequences of that approach firsthand. Students who achieve great marks can easily feel lost after school because they were never taught how to learn for themselves.

That’s why Luna Academy is designed to be a place that helps students beyond the content. We want to pass on the lessons about growth and overcoming hardships that we’ve learned along the way in our lives, to inspire and motivate, and (hopefully) help students develop the skills and mindset they’ll need beyond high school. And then, the grade will naturally come.

Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.

This is a slogan that we live and breathe. I am someone who always sets ambitious goals, both for my professional and personal life. Ultimately, the effort is always worthwhile, regardless of the outcome. I believe that with the right guidance, every student, no matter where they’re starting from, can go further than they think.

Thank you for reading this far. I’m very excited to share the Luna Experience with you.
